MIT Music and Theater Arts welcomes Mellon Fellow

Rebecca Dirksen was awarded a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Music and Theater Arts for 2012-2014.

Rebecca studies contemporary and classical music in Haiti. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California-Los Angeles in Ethnomusicology.  Her dissertation is titled “Power and Potential in Contemporary Haitian Music: Mizik Angaje, Cultural Action, and Community-Led Development in Port-au-Prince.”  Rebeca’s research focuses on a wide range of musical groups who have used cultural action for community development.

The School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences awards up to three fellowships each year to scholars working at the intersection of humanities disciplines or between humanities and science, technology or architecture.  The fellowship is possible with the generous support of the Mellon Foundation.
