Nov. 11, Friday - MIT Guest Artist Series presents Jupiter Quartet with pianist David Deveau. Dvorak, Piano Quintet; Prokofiev, Quartet No. 2 and Beethoven Quartet Op. 18, No. 6. 8pm, Kresge Auditorium. Free.
The Jupiter String Quartet: violinists Nelson Lee and Megan Freivogel, violist Liz Freivogel and cellist Daniel McDonough. As they enter their tenth year of making music together, this tightly knit ensemble has firmly established itself as an important voice in the world of chamber music.
The Jupiter Quartet concertizes across the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and the Americas. They have enjoyed playing in some of the world’s finest halls and have been enthusiastically received at several major music festivals. Selected in the Young Concert Artists International auditions in 2005, the Jupiters have since received several chamber music honors including the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the Cleveland Quartet Award from Chamber Music America, first prize in the Banff International String Quartet Competition (where they also received the Szekely Prize for best performance of a Beethoven quartet), and grand prize in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. From 2007-2010, the Quartet was in residence at the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Chamber Music Two. They have recorded for Marquis records, iTunes and Deutsche Grammophon.
Director of Rockport Music and Senior Lecturer in Music at MIT, pianist David Deveau has been acclaimed internationally for his expressive and poetic interpretations of repertoire ranging from Haydn to the present. Active also as a chamber musician, he has performed with members of the Juilliard, Shanghai, Borromeo, Muir, Ying, Kronos, Orion and St. Lawrence string quartets, and has been a guest artist with the Boston Chamber Music Society, most recently performing the 2009 Boston premiere of John Harbison’s Piano Trio No. 2.
